Rewetting of forests (completed) ¶
What impact does the rewetting of forest areas have on biodiversity, and how can this be implemented?
The working group addressed the topic of rewetting forest areas, focusing on the associated changes to the forest ecosystem and biodiversity. The most important aspects of the topic were summarised, drawing on research findings and practical examples. Questions addressed in the synthesis report include: Apart from promoting biodiversity, what other arguments favour restoring wet and moist forests? Which species and communities benefit from the restoration of wet and moist forests? What does biodiversity-promoting management of such sites look like? What role can ecosystem engineers such as beavers play in the rewetting of forest areas? What are the costs and maintenance requirements?
The Translational Centre Biodiversity Conservation developed these and other topics in workshops and written exchanges in order to provide an up-to-date and practical compilation of knowledge.
The working group started in mid-May 2024 and lasted until the end of September 2025.
